NYC: Inspiration Overload

For this personal project, the goal was to commemorate a trip to New York City through a motion piece. The excitement and vibrance of the city called for a fast-paced scrappy energy that was captured using quick camera movements, textures, and punchy music. The piece is one part in a series of digital scrapbooks called Slices.

Experiment in Progress

The Slices series is based in experimentation, and this iteration was no exception. After collecting images from the trip, they were brought into Photoshop to create the final layout. They were grouped roughly by day so they corresponded with the handwritten text that summarized each day. Then, the layout was moved to After Effects to begin animation. The overall goal was to complete the final animation, but there was lots of trial and error along the way. When creating some of the desired effects, new and faster ways to create them kept popping up. While that made the process for this piece slower, it made future projects much quicker.

Final Result

The final animation came out exactly as envisioned. The title card included the Slices logo, with the added NYC spray painted in front to introduce the theme. The spray paint effect was repeated at the end to create repetition and wrap up the video cleanly. The final spread was made to look like a rough scrapbooking attempt complete with notes to remember each day and doodles to help support the hand-made look.
