Family History Comes Alive
On June 17, 1946, Windsor, Ontario was hit by a deadly F4 tornado. In the aftermath, CBC radio interviewed one of the survivors. A British war bride who had just arrived in Canada three weeks ago, my great grandmother. This animation uses parts of her CBC interview and brings her story to life.

The visuals needed to capture the chaos while still clearly showing what was happening. Hand drawn rough animation was the perfect direction since it had natural variation, more emotion, and lots of texture compared to clean vector art. The limited colour palette was chosen to fit the sombre and seriousness of the events. It was also loosely inspired by newspaper clippings about the tornado found during research. The style frames below were tests of key moments in the animation to test if the visual direction would stand strong.
